The Aries Swing Away Spare Tire Carrier # AA2563000 is intended specifically for use on the 2007 thru 2017 Jeep Wranglers. It is not a fit for the 1997 Cherokee. I checked with Aries to make certain.

We have measured the clearance between a full sized 255/75R17 spare tire on the rear door of a 2009 Jeep Wrangler and the Curt Hitch Cargo Carrier, part # C18151. With the carrier folded, the uppermost clearance is about 1 inch between the tire and the face of the carrier. (This is the amount of clearance you have without the tire coming into contact with the spare tire. See the image at right.)
